The Embrace of Grace

I am thankful for quiet days
and cool breezes
and kind words
and longings met
in the warm embrace
of grace.
Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery it is. In the boredom and pain of it, no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it, because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.Frederick Buechner

Lord, in both the stillness and madness of our day, help us to embrace your grace.

Sharing The Wonder – A Simple Pleasure

My husband and I like to take walks at the end of the day. We usually head out just before sunset. Tonight we decided to play a little “I spy” with the digital camera, capturing whatever wonders we might find along the way.
I loved this soft green foliage carpeting the woodland trail. Sweet to see something so delicate living among the twigs and stones.
He was drawn to the curiosity of a cactus nestled under a gnarled, leafless tree. Ironic that, in trying to get a closer shot, his arms were pricked by the tangled tree branches.
I became a part of the paparazzi when I came across this little
cluster of pansies. Hard to resist the first color of spring after
 a long season of brown.
He tried to coax a smile from these shy buds on a hanging branch but they hid in the light of the camera flash. Instead, he caught the fading color of the twilight sky. Just as lovely, I think.
My simple pleasure today? I’ll give you a hint.
It wasn’t snapping pictures or enjoying God’s creation or walking in the glow of another beautiful sunset, although I’m grateful for all these things.
It was being able to experience it all with the love of my life by my side. Spending time with my wonderful husband is something
I never take for granted. I am thankful to God for such a gift. Thankful for eyes to see the wonder right in front of me.
He takes my hand and we walk home. I breathe contentment. For him, for this day, for every blessing. And for all the simple pleasures we share together.
Happily linking up with Simple Pleasures and Thankful Thursdays.

From Sunrise to Sunset

“From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the LORD is to be praised.” Psalm 113:3

This morning, while darkness covered the earth in a blanket of black, I slipped out of warm sheets to greet a new day.

Slowly, the sky turned the palest shade of blue.

Now, the soft light of the sun is illuminating houses and people and cars filling busy streets.

And, in the midst of it all, I open my eyes to pages of promises radiating hope.

The Word of the Lord shines so bright, you just cannot help but see the truth. And, when you do, you are compelled to proclaim with the psalmist David:

“Praise the LORD, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the LORD, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103:1-5

Today, I am thankful for the simple pleasure of waking up to a new day. For eyes to see the beauty of God’s creation. For another chance to praise Him for life and breath and the hope of unchanging promises.

Lord, help us remember that you are worthy of our praise, from sunrise to sunset. Amen.

Main Street Meandering – A Simple Pleasure

There are few things more fun and relaxing to me than a window shopping stroll down Main Street, U.S.A. Anytime my husband and I visit a place with a quaint downtown district, my feet instinctively begin moving towards the welcoming shops. More times than not, I end up wiling away long hours without buying a thing. After all, that’s not the point, really.

I’m just happy to be taking in the sights and sounds and aromas of every little detail surrounding me. And, since Autumn seems to bring out my nesting nature, I find these little ventures are a way to get great decorating ideas for my home. I should tell that to my perplexed husband who has so often endured my trance-like shopping treks. “See, honey, there is a practical side to these seemingly meaningless, random meanderings.”

So, as I wing my way from shop to shop, I gather beauty with my eyes. I perch, still, at each enchanting display filled with vibrant colors and textures, old trinkets mixed with new. Like the one here.
And, even though my heart quickens, my steps become slow, more deliberate. I move carefully through the jam-packed aisles, touching pieces of fabric and books and old wooden frames. I take time to smell each candle to determine if it’s fragrance matches the name on the jar. My senses come alive! Just as they did when I floated down the vintage staircase into the basement of the antique bookstore pictured below.
Today, I am thankful for the simple pleasure of shopping on Main Street.
Because, through this slow-paced meandering, inspiration is found, ideas are sparked and dreams are born. At least that’s what happens to me.
What about you?

I’ve included a scripture below in response to Lynn’s request for us to share an inspirational verse. This one brings comfort, reminding me that God is my provider, filling me with good things. Because of Him, I can enjoy life’s simple pleasures and be thankful.
“For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.” Psalm 107:9

Simple Start – Thankful Heart

The best meal of the day, for me, is breakfast. It is one of the great pleasures of life to wake up to a steaming cup of coffee and the aroma of my favorite comfort food wafting through the air and into my head like a great memory.

I was raised in the South on biscuits and gravy, bacon and eggs and grits and sausage and pancakes, etc, etc. Of course, these days, I enjoy lighter fare too – yogurt and fruit and oatmeal or egg white omelets with wheat toast. Yum!

My husband and I enjoy cooking a big breakfast on weekends – usually biscuits and eggs or french toast or waffles…and the occasional pastry, of course. But my go-to sunrise meal most days during the week is good ol’ cereal.

I LOVE cereal. Over the years, I’ve sampled many different brands and found a couple of favorites that I’ve enjoyed for breakfast, lunch and even dinner sometimes.

I am thankful for the simple pleasure of a tasty meal to start my day. But I am especially thankful for the way God feeds my hungry soul.

“Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.” Psalm 107:8-9 NKJV

Today, I am praying that He will fill your hunger and satisfy your longings. Be blessed!
