A Graduation Meditation

“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.”
Joshua 1:8

It’s graduation season. People everywhere are picking up diplomas and moving into a new phase of their lives.

My husband and I attended the graduation ceremony of our nephew in Norman, Oklahoma this weekend. We were just a few miles from where that massive tornado struck last week. Not far from where terrified people sought refuge in underground cellars, bathrooms and closets. Where children clung helplessly to the shaking walls of a school hallway.

And I couldn’t help but look at all those hundreds of soon-to-be former high school students and wonder if they are prepared for the storms to come. Because life is full of them, both literally and figuratively.

“My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.”
Proverbs 4: 20-22

Graduation

And it’s one thing to have head knowledge, but what about heart wisdom? The thing that will steady you when the wind starts whipping and the earth gets ripped up right under your feet?

If I could, I would tell them this. There is only one safe haven. One true shelter. And that is Almighty God. Keep close to Him and make His Word a priority because it is your life source. Everything you want – Success, Peace, Purpose, Love, Fulfillment – It all begins here.

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”
Psalm 1:1-3

Feel free to share this with the graduate in your life. Or with someone who could just use a reminder that the forces of nature are no match for the power of God.

Indeed, to know (and obey) His Word is to know a force more powerful than any storm we could ever face.
