The Bible – What’s In It For Me?

Have you ever had a day (or a month) when the cares of life weighed heavy around your neck? Yes? I’ve been there too. And I’m sure most of you would agree with me that you found comfort and strength in the Word of God during those times.

And you’d also agree there are many other benefits to the Bible. As a matter of fact, it’s the greatest source of inspiration we could ever find.

But did you know?

The American Bible Society in their 2013 State of the Bible Report says that,

“While 66% of those surveyed agreed that the Bible contains everything a person needs to know to live a meaningful life, 58% say they don’t personally want wisdom and advice from the Bible and about the same amount (57%) read it fewer than five times per year.” (

Makes sense, huh? We think the Bible is good for us, we just don’t want to take advice from it.

Maybe folks have just forgotten how good life could be if we lived by Good Book.

Maybe the Me Generation is wondering, “What’s in it for me?”

So I thought I’d make a short list to answer that question.

5 Things We Get by Getting Into the Word and Letting the Word Get Into Us

1. Hope and Encouragement:

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:4

2. Tools for Living:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

3. Direction:

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105

4. True Success:

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8

5. Peace

“Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing causes them to stumble.” Psalm 119:165

And the list goes on. All the things we yearn for – knowledge, wisdom, purpose, joy and fulfillment, just to name a few more – can be found in the Holy Pages.

But the ultimate benefit?

And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through his name. John 20: 30-31

May we all be inspired to open the Bible and open our hearts to what we find there. Because, what’s in it for me and for you and for all who believe?

Abundant Life!

Eternal Life!

Now who wouldn’t want that?

Question: Do you think more people would make time for the Bible if they knew what was in it for them?

  1. Amen. My Dad always said you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. I believe many are led to the Bible, but few read, even Christians who enter the church regularly don’t stop and feed themselves from the Word, they wait to be spoon fed…so sad. How do you make it without the Bread of Life?

  2. Hi Angel! I know a person who believes that the bible ‘lies’! Just crazy stuff. I think these kinds of people all want to live right, but want to do it their own way. Which usually ends badly. Everyone wants to determine their own way to go.

I love reading the Scriptures, and try to do it every day. There is always a pearl there from the Lord. Aren’t we blessed?

    Great post today, Angel 🙂
