You Have To Start Somewhere

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”  Mark Twain

I love this quote because it is just so practical. It reminds the perfectionist in me that I don’t have to do it all, be it all or know it all to succeed. I just have to do the first thing. And then the next thing until I accomplish whatever it is I want done.

I am inspired by people that accomplish what they set out to do. That may be because I have a history of stopping before I get started. I often convince myself that the job is too big to tackle. That maybe I’m not equipped, prepared, or talented enough to do this, that or the other.

The Pastor’s sermon this weekend was about the story in Acts 3 of the Apostle Peter healing the lame beggar. The man who was lame from birth was given much more than the couple of coins he must have been expecting when Peter looked at him and spoke these words:

“Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.” Acts 3:6-8

The congregation was challenged to do what we can, to give what we have, to take the first small step towards making a difference in someone’s life.

Are you like me? Do you languish so long over the details of how to get to the finish line that you never get off the starting block?

We may not have all the answers but one thing is sure.

We are not alone.

“…since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” Hebrews 12:1-2a

It’s a daunting task. To think about running a race, or doing anything for that matter, when your legs won’t work and you’re carrying a load of fear, guilt, shame … (insert whatever may be weighing you down here).

And when it comes to our own strength and ability, aren’t we all like that lame beggar?
Yes, but there is hope yet for the weary and weak! And that hope is in Jesus. Our healer. The One who hears our cries for help, looks us in the eyes, takes us by the hand and says, “Walk”.

Lord, whatever task we face today, whether it be in the spiritual or physical realm, may we remember to call on your power to get us started. Then, I pray you would help us run our race with endurance. Run and finish well.
